What Questions Should I Ask Before Installing an Outdoor Kitchen?

Table of Contents

Are you contemplating adding an outdoor kitchen to your home? That’s a fantastic decision! Not only can an outdoor kitchen add value to your home, but it can also transform your backyard into the ideal venue for your summer get-togethers. However, before you begin, there are some questions you should ask yourself. This blog post is designed to guide you through the process of installing your dream outdoor kitchen, so keep reading!

1. Will You Run Gas To Your Outdoor Kitchen?

One of the first questions to ask before installing an outdoor kitchen is whether you want natural gas running to it. It’s becoming increasingly popular to opt for natural gas because it offers considerable convenience.

Instead of repeatedly refilling propane tanks, you can run your appliances off of the natural gas line. If you frequently host parties or love cooking outdoors, this is a point to seriously consider.

2. Will You Need Electricity For Your Grill Station?

Modern grills often have electronic features, and these require electricity. So, when planning for your outdoor kitchen, make sure you consider whether your grill station will need an electric supply.

Beyond just the grill, it’s also useful to have outlets for other electric appliances. If you plan on using a blender for delicious cocktails, or an ice maker on those warm summer days, including electric outlets in your design is a good idea.

3. What Type of Surface Will You Use?

When deciding on your outdoor kitchen’s design, the choice of surface is crucial. Over the years, we’ve used a variety of surfaces, but we’ve found granite to be the most economical and durable choice.

About five years ago, we switched to using granite for outdoor kitchens exclusively, and it’s been a great decision. Not only is it cost-effective, but it’s also low-maintenance, which our clients appreciate.

4. What Should Be the Size and Shape of Your Kitchen?

The size and shape of your outdoor kitchen are vital aspects to consider. You want a space that will serve your cooking needs, offer adequate seating, and also fit comfortably into your backyard. Our average L-shaped kitchen is around 8×8 or 16 linear feet long. If you want a straightforward grill station with minimal seating, a seven-foot straight island should suffice.

For a straight kitchen, we recommend a size between seven and ten feet. If you’re leaning towards an L-shaped kitchen, aim for between 16 and 20 feet. This will provide enough space for your cooking elements, as well as seating for guests.

When it comes to width, if you choose to include a raised drink rail, plan for around three feet. Without the drink rail, two and a half feet should be adequate.

5. Have You Thought About Ventilation?

Last but certainly not least among the questions to ask before installing an outdoor kitchen is ventilation. A well-ventilated outdoor kitchen can prevent overheating of your cooking appliances and improve the overall safety and comfort of your space.

We usually incorporate vent plates into our designs, with the number depending on how many cooking surfaces you intend to have.

Conclusion: Crafting Your Ideal Outdoor Kitchen

Planning your outdoor kitchen can seem like a daunting task, but armed with these crucial considerations, you’re now prepared to start your journey. Remember, the key is to create a space that is functional, comfortable, and blends seamlessly with your home’s outdoor aesthetic.
