April Transformation Blog: The Process of Building a Covered Structure

Here at Hinkle Hardscapes, we specialize in building gorgeous outdoor living environments. With over 2,500 projects under our belt, we know that when it comes to entertainment, there is one feature that goes above and beyond – a covered structure. Covered structures are a specific type of roof attached to the outer wall of a house or garage. These elements truly extend living space by providing privacy and protection from unpredictable weather. Not only do they create shade outdoors; they reduce indoor energy expenditures by shielding windows from sunlight. With the option of incorporating lighting, fans, furniture, televisions, and speakers; covered structures are perfect for year-round outdoor entertainment.

In this month’s transformation blog, we’re going to take you through the process of building a covered structure over your patio. Before we jump into the makeover, let’s take a look at the before photo. This Leawood family had a great stamped concrete patio, but they weren’t getting as much use out of their backyard as they wanted. We knew that a covered structure would be the perfect addition to take their entertainment space to the next level.

Building a Patio Cover

The project began by assembling the structure’s framework. For all exposed elements, like the wood paneling and beams, we used a beautiful cedar.

In the second stage, the crew installed composite flooring and an electrician wired the pavilion.

Next, cinder blocks were used to form a post wrap and lay the base for the grill station. Once positioned, they were prepped for the application of stone veneer.

For this project, we used Yukon Stack Stone from Builder’s Stone. The multi-toned veneer ties in the brown of the composite wood flooring and grey of the house.

Nearly there! As the project was wrapping up, the ceiling paneling was stained, steel cabinets and granite countertops were installed, and wall sheathing was used to build a surface on which to mount the tv. This sheathing will be wrapped with ipe, a gorgeous Brazilian hardwood.

Time for the final reveal!

As you can see, the finishing touches made all the difference in ensuring the structure was visually cohesive with the client’s home. The exposed beams were stained a dark brown, the soffits and trim were painted to match the house, and a granite bar top was added for extra dining space. The final result – with lighting, a fan, television, speakers, a grill station, and comfy seating, this family will now be getting much more use out of their backyard year round!
