Throughout our 13 years as a company, Hinkle Hardscapes has worked with every type of yard. We have the experience to tackle any challenge your property may present. In this month’s blog, we’re giving you the inside scoop on a project with an unexpectedly complicated demo. Read on to see how this backyard was transformed from piles of rubble into a sleek outdoor living area.
We’ll start by taking a look at some before photos. The original concrete slab and brick wall were worn down and falling apart. The homeowners were frustrated with the state of their yard, but the prospect of renovating was overwhelming.
Our designer Nick Knight came to the rescue, developing a plan that would refresh the outdated space with modern finishes. The makeover began with a design consultation. Nick made this 3D rendering to help the clients visualize how the new layout and materials would tie in with the facade of their home.
Construction began with demo – lots and lots of demo. The old concrete foundation and brick wall were thicker than anticipated, making their removal extremely labor-intensive. Handheld tools can typically get the job done; but to expedite this demo, the crew had to bring in a hydraulic jackhammer. When a project involves removing existing hardscapes, a mess is inevitable. To minimize disorder and maximize organization, the crew placed a dumpster in the driveway and cleaned the site at the end of each day.
With demo complete and the ground leveled, it was time to begin installing the retaining wall. As the layers were placed, gravel was compacted in incremental lifts to create the patio foundation. The old slab sat on top of dirt and concrete. This unstable base shifted and condensed over time, causing the sagging and cracking seen in the before photos. Gravel backfill lifts are solid, optimizing the longevity of the new stamped concrete patio.
Once the wall and backfill were built up to the desired height, the concrete was poured. For their patio, the clients selected the Ashlar Slate pattern in Slate Gray with a Charcoal border. The cool tones go perfectly with the retaining wall’s Anchor Highland blocks in the Oxford blend.
This design utilizes three sets of rounded steps and one staircase. With a bold border and column-framed landing, the stairway is a standout feature of the space. Lanterns and LED undercap lighting further elevate the patio and ensure that it will be safe to enjoy at night time.
The final result – an outdoor living area that is equally attractive and functional! Transforming this backyard was an arduous process, but our crews don’t back down from a challenge.
